NOTS stands for Not One The Same. The reason that the founders of NOTS chose this name is because they realize that every individual has different needs and that development aid will only be effective if those different needs are taken into consideration.
The goal of the NOTS Foundation is to increase the number of people in developing countries who are able to lead a self-supporting life. NOTS aims to achieve this goal by two main activities: micro credits and renewable energy.
NOTS wants to help entrepreneurs in developing countries by providing them with loans, so that they can build or strengthen their economic activities and improve the living conditions of their families. That way can get a chance to break the cycle of poverty.
NOTS invests in renewable energy products for developing countries. Not only because it is better for the climate, but especially to improve the living conditions of the population. By using renewable energy products families can: save on their fuel expenses, which increases their disposable income; they save time which can be used for activities that generate income; and the renewable energy products attribute to a better health.
If effective these two activities are combined. To finance the activities NOTS offers Dutch investors the possibility to buy bonds.
NOTS chose an entrepreneurial approach because the two founders of NOTS, Rolf Visser and Bart Hartman, two entrepreneurs, are convinced that an entrepreneurial approach is more effective and more efficiënt than a traditional approach in development aid. This entrepreneurial approach is reflected in the fact that NOTS aims for economical sustainability. For NOTS, economically sustainable means that each of the activities generate enough revenues to cover the related costs
