Blue Charcoal

MAKING ALL CHARCOAL PRODUCTION IN AFRICA SUSTAINABLE BY 2025

Business model

About 650 million people cook with charcoal in Africa and nearly 12 million people work in the sector. Charcoal has major economic value, yet it is causing Africa’s forests to disappear at an alarming rate and emits 240 million tons of CO2 per year.

NOTS Blue Charcoal stops the environmental damage caused by charcoal production and increases the incomes of charcoal producers.

The business model has four elements:

  • Efficient charcoal production using the ‘ADAM Retort’, a small-scale oven
  • Reforestation to produce a sustainable feedstock for charcoal production
  • Cash crop production in between trees to increase and diversify community incomes
  • Distribution to create a premium market for sustainable charcoal

Facts & figures

  • Blue Charcoal reduces charcoal-driven deforestation by 100%
  • The ADAM Retort emits 75% less emissions than traditional production methods.
  • A charcoal producer earns 25% more in year 1 with Blue Charcoal
